Our Mission
Caracola Creative Languages offers affordable and innovative language programs in the New Haven Spanish-speaking community.
Our Vision
We see a community in which multiple languages are used widely and our many cultures appreciated-- where understanding and communication allow for social and economic opportunities for everyone.
Our Philosophy
Being able to use and speak more than one language offers innumerable opportunities for growth. Since language forms a central part of cultural understanding and identity, we seek to develop exciting cultural experiences in collaboration with others in the community.
Our organization strives to bridge social divides across our communities by inviting diverse groups to imaginatively create together in their native or second or third language. We celebrate the many rich cultures of the Americas in our programs.
The benefits of combining artistic creation and language learning are numerous. Artistic creation is not only an essential part of culture and identity, but is also ideal for language learning because it requires full cognitive, emotional and sensory involvement. Creating art can be transformative, just as learning a language can be. Both activities draw on the imagination, and as the educational philosopher Maxine Greene wrote, “Imagination is what, above all, makes empathy possible.” We believe creative and joyful language learning nurtures empathy. It encourages understanding by inviting us to imagine new ways of seeing and connecting with the world.
