Spanish Immersion Camp -- June 2014
"¡Vamos de viaje!"
The theme of our first summer immersion camp was travel -- journeys by foot and of the imagination! We sang songs about trips and walking, and we really did walk over hill and vale every day to the neighbors' swimming pool. We took two trips "off campus" -- to the Gentle Giant Farm, where we labeled the growing veggies in Spanish, and to the New Haven Green to hear flamenco music en vivo. We played soccer, expertly coached by Juan Cadavid and Octavio Sotelo, and played Minecraft in Spanish (set up by Vincent Balbarin). We cooked, and created a puppet show as the culminating event of the week. We were fortunate to collaborate with the artist and teacher Nellie Shevelkina from Creative Arts Workshop, who coached the puppet making and set design.

A central inspiration for us was the story Juan y sus zapatos by the Mexican author Carlos Pellicer López (2003, Fondo de Cultura Económica). We created a short puppet show with art, dialogue and music, based on his book, and made delicious pastelitos de guayaba. In this story, Juan has to stay home in bed because he ate too many guavas and has a stomachache. While he lies in his bed, his shoes start to tell him stories reminding him of their adventures together. They tell him about a trip he takes one night -- over the town and the trees, to a bell tower, where he meets a variety of animals in the midst of a big party with music and dancing. Was it real or was it a dream?

Juan: ¡Oh, mi estómago! ¡Bahh!
¡No! Te dolerá el estómago. No digas que no te avisé. |
¿Listos? Uno, dos, tres... El gato: Hola ¿Qué estás haciendo? ¿Tus zapatos pueden hablar? |
